Ancient Shores, Modern Threats: El Kouf National Park and the Challenge of Integrated Heritage Protection
In Libya’s El Kouf National Park natural and cultural heritage are so fundamentally intertwined. The parks Marine Protected Area (MPA) is home to nesting loggerhead sea turtles, critically endangered Mediterranean monk seals, but also bears evidence of thousands of years of continuous human occupation, prehistoric caves, Greek and Roman period harbours, Roman farmsteads, ancient watchtowers — all within the boundaries of a single MPA.
